Sophomore Inspire Week

What was my Sophomore inspire week? My sophomore inspire week was volunteering for soul dog rescues shelter, what we did was help them fix up and make their shelter look a little bit better. What my role during it was just being a worker that does what is asked an expected, if their was a task such as mopping 3 rooms I did it without question. As well as putting in hard physical labor we had a few moments of time to socialize with the animals. In the end with a total of 10 hours of hard labor we managed to completely renovate 2 entire rooms. We fix holes and dents in the walls, fresh coats of paint and new shelves and cages. Aside to that we also had to clean dog feces and walk them to help them get outside. It was fun and given the opportunity to do it again for school volunteering I would do it again.

Reflection

What were the biggest and most lasting things you learned during this experience?  What aha moments did you have? What lessons did you learn that you will take with you moving forward through school and work?

The thing that has stuck to me from this inspire week was learning the fact that there are more than 250,000 dogs out in the indian reservation that have not been captured, spayed and neutered. The challenges that the shelter face since they are on the reservation is that money and resources are limited, 80% of their resources comes out of their own pocket. I've taken from this that volunteer work is hard and a big sacrifice

How did things you have learned or are learning in school connect to what you did in your service project?  What skills did you take from the classroom that helped you during this project? What skills did you develop that could carry back into school?

From what i've learned mostly from my outside job and a small amount of school let me accel in the inspire week, what helped me was knowing the expectations of hard labor, doing what youre told even if you disagree with it and doing the work even if you dont like it. I developed no further skills that I already have previously known.

How effective were you at time and task management during this project?  What kinds of structures worked for you, where did time management become more difficult?  What did you notice about HOW you worked when you had big chunks of work time?

I thought personally that I used my time wisely because when i was asked to do something I started doing it immediately and worked hard, usually getting the task done in half an hour. An example was dismantling cages and bringing new ones inside then assembling the new ones. What I noticed about me working hard was we improved an immense amount of the shelter within 10 hours of total work.

Look back at your YouScience results.  How do your YouScience results connect to the experience you had during Sophomore Inspire Week?  Did you see the skills and aptitudes highlighted in your YouScience results in your Inspire Week?  How?

Well my youscience sort of matched up, if I wanted to have it match up I would have picked the playground design since i want to be an architect, this week i was looking for a more physical labor based job. My love for building things did match though.

What advice would you give to a sophomore about how to make the most from their Sophomore Inspire Week experience?  This could focus on how to choose, what to do once you’re in it, what skills to develop beforehand, etc.

The advice i’d give to next year's sophomores is the same as everyone else, take the SIW that you want to do, not your friends. You want to enjoy your week, not be with your friend and suffer the work. If you love physical work do Soul Dogs, If you like being creative do the murals Inspire week.
